1. Internet users can access the information by following “National Electoral Search” link provided on the website of the Election Commission of India (www.eci.gov.in).
2. Mobile Internet users can access the services through a specially designed website electoralsearch.in.
3. Android phone based users can install an application from the Mobile Seva AppStore of the Government (apps.mgov.gov.in under electoral category).

4. Mobile users can use SMS service by sending a pre-formatted SMS to the predefined numbers.
4.1 The services are available on a special three digit code 166 provided for BSNL, Idea, MTNL, Tata Docomo, Tata Indicom and Vodafone users.
4.2 A special five digit code 51969 is provided for accessing the service by operators such as Aircel, Airtel, BSNL, Idea, MTS, Reliance, Tata Docomo, Tata Indicom, Uninor, Videocon and Vodafone.
4.3 A user can access the service by sending the SMS to a 10-digit number 09223166166.

In order to access the services through SMS, Voters must send a pre-formatted SMS with a word “ECI” followed by details such as name, name of father/husband, locality, age or date of birth and gender separated by commas. As an example, an SMS “ECI Prabhat Singla” would fetch the details of a voter by name “Prabhat Singla” on a nation-wide search of voters.

The service is brought to the voters by Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) using the state-of-the-art technologies and includes advance features like phonetic search on names across multiple languages through the grant-in-aid provided by the Department of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India.

FAQs

1. Can one be enrolled at more than one place
A person cannot be enrolled as a voter in more than one place in the same constituency or in more than one constituency in view of the provisions contained under Sec. 17 and 18 of R.P.Act, 1950.

2. If I am working and living in Daman or Diu, can I be a voter in my native village
No. If you are working in the UT of Daman and Diu and residing there, you are an ordinary resident of the UT of Daman and Diu in terms of Sec 19/b. Therefore you can be enrolled at UT of Daman and Diu only and not in your native village.

3. Can a non resident Indian citizen become a voter
According to Section 19 of the RP Act 1950 only a person who is ordinarily resident in a constituency is entitled to be registered in the electoral roll of that constituency.

However such of the non-resident Indian Citizens who are employed under Govt of India in a post outside India are eligible to be registered as voters in terms of Sec 20 8 d read with Sec 20 3 of the RP Act 1950

4. Can a non citizen of India become a voter
No. A person who is not a citizen of India cannot be registered as a voter. Article 326 of the Constitution read with Sec. 16 of RP Act, 1950 clarify the point.

5. When was the voting age reduced from TWENTY ONE years to EIGHTEEN years
1989 The voting age was reduced from 21 years to 18 years during 1989

6. Was eighteen years the minimum voting age in India from the beginning
No Earlier the age for registration of a voter was 21 years Through the 61st amendment Act 1988 of the Constitution read with Act 21 of 1989 amending the RP Act 1950 the minimum age of registration of a voter has been brought down to 18 years This has been made effective from 28 03 1989

7. For every constituency, there is a list of voters which is called electoral roll. What is the minimum age for enrollment in an electoral roll
Eighteen Years. For every constituency, there is a voters list Article 326 of the Constitution, and Sec. 19 of R.P.Act, 1950 stipulate that the minimum age for registration of a voter is 18 years

8. Who appoints the Electoral Registration officer
Under section 13B of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, the Election Commission of India, in consultation with the State/UT Government, appoints an Officer of the Government or the Local Authorities as the Electoral Registration Officer.

In addition, the Election Commission of India also appoints one or more Assistant Electoral Registration Officers to assist the Electoral Registration Officer in the performance of his functions in the matter of preparation/revision of electoral rolls.

9. Who is responsible for the preparation of electoral rolls for a Parliamentary or Assembly Constituency
