Bye Election To Madurantakam & Dharapuram Assembly Constituencies
The counting of votes for the Madurantakam and Dharapuram Assembly by-elections in Tamil Nadu is currently underway today, October 9, 2026. The by-polls, held on October 6, 2026, registered high voter turnouts—86.26% in Madurantakam and around 80.30% in Dharapuram.
The elections serve as a significant political test for the newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. Both seats became vacant after former AIADMK MLAs resigned and switched allegiances to the TVK.

Why the By-Elections Occurred?
The by-polls were necessitated after the sitting All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) MLAs—K. Maragatham Kumaravel (Madurantakam) and P. Sathyabama (Dharapuram)—resigned from their posts. Both legislators defected to support and join the newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, which took power following the April–May 2026 general assembly elections.
Voter Turnout:
The Election Commission of India (ECI) reported robust voter participation across both constituencies, though numbers saw a slight dip compared to the high-stakes general election held five months prior:
** Madurantakam Assembly Constituency: Recorded a 86.26% voter turnout.
** Dharapuram Assembly Constituency: Recorded a 80.30% voter turnout.
Key Contenders & Stakes:
The elections developed into intense three-cornered battles. The TVK has re-nominated the former AIADMK MLAs under its own party banner to retain the seats, while the principal opposition parties seek to capture them:
** Madurantakam (SC): Features TVK’s K. Maragatham Kumaravel, AIADMK’s S. Kanitha Sampath, and DMK’s I. Paranthamen.
** Dharapuram (SC): Features TVK’s P. Sathyabama, going up against candidates from both the AIADMK and DMK.
The results are widely seen as the first major popularity test for Chief Minister Vijay’s TVK government since coming to Power.
