** Velmurugan was born in 1970 in Puliyur Kattusakai village, Kurinjipadi taluk, Cuddalore district, as the fifth child to Thirunavukkarasu and Thanakkodi, into a farming family.
** In 1985, at a young age, he was inspired by the Tamil Nadu Liberation Front and participated in their meetings and various events. He was interrogated in connection with attacks on police stations that were carried out to protest against the police’s repression of the lower classes.
** In 1987, the government gave maximum pressure to the Tamil Nadu Liberation Front. Reservation for the Vanniyar people intensified. He had already realized the plight of the Vanniyar people. He actively involved himself in the reservation struggle.
** Due to this, he faced many hardships from the police. Not only himself but also his family faced hardships, so he made Chennai a suitable place for himself.
** He entered politics as the Chennai Thiruvottriyur city secretary of the Patali Makkal Katchi.
** Due to his hard field work in the party, he was also appointed as the State Youth Secretary – and was fielded as the Thiruvettyur candidate in the assembly elections held on 24/06/1996.
** Subsequently, after the expulsion of Panruti Ramachandran from the PML-N, he decided that this was the right person to oppose him, and the post of Unified Cuddalore District Secretary came to him automatically…! His unique character and personality led to him being fielded as the PML-N candidate in the Panruti Assembly elections in 2001.
** He won the election and impressed everyone with his maiden speech in the Legislative Assembly. He had a unique identity among the members of the Legislative Assembly due to his oratory skills and the influence he had gained among the youth.
** He earned the title of ‘Bharat Jyothi’ with his actions. Following that, he was promoted as a whip. Each time, his speech and actions have become more refined. Yes, his actions have even won over the opposition leaders.
** That is what made him contest the Panruti Assembly elections again in 2006. He won.
