Punjab Legislative Assembly Election

The 2022 Punjab Legislative Assembly elections will be held in Punjab on 20 February 2022 to elect the 117 members of the 16th Assembly of the Punjab Legislative Assembly. The votes will be counted and the results will be declared on 10 March 2022.

In the 2017 Punjab Legislative Assembly election, the Indian National Congress won 77 out of 117 total seats. This landslide victory pushed the ruling alliance between Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to third place with only 18 seats. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) came in second, winning 20 seats and forming the official opposition in Punjab

The Parliament of india passed 3 agricultural farm laws in Lok Sabha on 17 September 2020 and in the Rajya Sabha on 20 September 2020. The President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, gave his assent on 27 September 2020.  Farmers began protesting in Punjab in late 2020.

Protest were against the Union government’s Farm laws. Farmers Union started campaigning against central government. Punjab is agricultural state and it will effect Punjab elections. On 19 November 2021, the union government decided to repeal the bills.

Election Schedule

The election schedule was announced by the Election Commission of India on 8 January 2022. However, the election date was postponed from 14 February 2022 to 20 February 2022 on account of Guru Ravidass Jayanti.
